Investing in women at YRP

Deputy Chief Cecile Hammond

Women play key roles in all branches at York Regional Police and their contributions are vital to ensuring our community members feel safe and secure.

York Regional Police is proud to have a group of high-ranking female officers who serve as mentors to all members of the organization.

This includes Deputy Chief Cecile Hammond. She was appointed to the role in 2020, becoming the first woman to join the Executive Leadership Team at York Regional Police.

Deputy Chief Hammond serves as a role model for many within York Regional Police, especially her fellow female members.

"Having people pull me aside and tell me straight from their hearts, what it means to them that I'm sitting in this position, that it gives them somebody to aspire to, to me, that is the most rewarding thing," Deputy Chief Hammond said.

York Regional Police knows female officers are an invaluable asset, and efforts are ongoing to recruit new members.

Deputy Chief Hammond said women should "take the opportunity."

"Don't wait for someone to tap you on the shoulder and say you're ready," said Deputy Chief Hammond. "If you feel that you're ready, take action. If you don't shoot, you don't score."

York Regional Police offers a number of programs and events throughout the year geared toward supporting women who are interested in a challenging and rewarding career in policing.

Women’s Symposium

Meet trailblazing women in policing and learn more about a career filled with excitement that knows no limits at a York Regional Police Women’s Symposium. These special events to welcome the next generation of women leaders to York Regional Police, allowing for invaluable networking opportunities.

Attendees enjoy recruitment presentations, guest speakers, exhibit booths highlighting career opportunities and specialized units and work areas at YRP.

Those who join YRP at a Women’s Symposium will also be provided information regarding interviews, applications and the recruitment process and testing.

The Women’s Symposium is also an excellent social and networking opportunity.

Fit 4 PREP Boot Camp

To give a boost to the number of women applying to YRP, York Regional Police has created the Fit 4 PREP Boot Camp.

The boot camp offers female applicants the opportunity to train with police professionals in order to prepare for their physical Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) test and help boost their confidence.

As part of the recruiting process, candidates must successfully complete the PREP test.

The Fit 4 PREP boot camp consists of physical training and weekly empowerment sessions designed to help female applicants boost their confidence.

In previous years, some candidates who have participated in the Fit 4 PREP Boot Camp have successfully completed the PREP test and have been hired by York Regional Police.
