Deputy Chief Almeida, a progressive leader who brings a wealth of experience to the role, was sworn in December 3, 2022.

Deputy Chief Almeida has more than 34 years of law enforcement experience in a variety of assignments including Homicide, Drugs and Vice, Intelligence and Strategic Services.

He holds a Masters of Arts Degree in Leadership from the University of Guelph and has completed the Police Leadership Program through the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Alvaro also holds a Law Enforcement Diploma from Seneca College.

He co-led the cultural transformation at York Regional Police, called Breakthrough, that has inspired positive organizational change to support and include all members.

The focus of Breakthrough is member wellness and inclusion, strengthening working relationships between members and modernizing many of processes, including how we recruit, retain and promote talent.

Deputy Almeida has volunteered for Special Olympics Ontario, Victim Services of York Region, Inn From the Cold and currently sits on the on the Board of Directors for 360kids, which provides wraparound services and housing for at-risk youth in York Region.

He is committed to working to ensure access to equitable services, emergency housing, culturally appropriate programming, trauma support and youth homelessness.
